But in all this planning and Pinning, there is one design element you might be unknowingly neglecting: texture.

You've probably heard the phrase adding texture to a space, but do you know how to put it into action? It's a favorite buzzword among designers—and one of the keys to creating a space that looks "finished"—so we went straight to the source for the best tips and ideas to successfully incorporate texture to your home.

What Does Adding Texture Actually Mean?

To put it simply, adding texture means creating visual interest, explains Los Angeles-based designer Liz Foster. And you can do that in a number of ways, but the key is diversity among the objects and finishings in your space.

"When we talk about adding texture, we are referring to the layering of various textiles, materials, colors, and metals in a space," say Christina Samatas and Renee DiSanto, the Chicago duo behind Park & Oak Interior Design. Think: adding a wool blanket to your leather armchair, a coffee table that mixes brass and unfinished wood, a pink velvet sofa against a pink wallpapered wall.

Liz points out that in addition to being something you can touch and feel, texture can also refer simply to a visual display of objects. "For instance, a collection of varying types of pottery displayed on a shelf will give your space more 'texture' or 'visual interest' than a single framed photo displayed in the same spot," she says.

Lots of Layers Means Lots of Pieces

Here's one secret: Nailing the textured, layered look usually takes time—that is unless you're a designer with a storage unit full of staging decor. That's why sometimes when you first move into a new home, even filling it up with all the necessities leaves it feeling like it's missing something.

"I think forgetting to layer in texture can lead to a space feeling flat, or soulless," says Nashville designer Lori Paranjape. Christina and Renee second that idea: "Texture is really the secret to making a space look and feel finished and lived in. The more you can mix opposing elements the better."

Over time, you can buy pieces that really speak to you and add them in to create a new layer and further fill out a space. And doing this gradually is almost always better than trying to buy every single element at once (again, those designers have been stockpiling or eyeing these perfectly placed goods for months if not years), because you shouldn't buy something just because it checks a box if you don't love it.

"I encourage incorporating texture for the same reason I discourage clients from buying items in 'sets,'" Liz says. "Like when the coffee table and side tables are a perfect match. A room feels flat and lifeless if all the furniture is the same wood with the same linen upholstery, drapes, and pillows." Again, diversity is key.

So as you purchase new layers for your home (or simply rearrange what's already there), here are some ideas and guidelines to keep in mind to ensure you're incorporating texture like a pro.

Texture can be monochromatic:

"If a space I'm designing is white, I never try to stay with the same white tone. I use an entire spectrum of whites, beige, taupe, ivory, even black. It's the build-up of sameness that keeps the space from feeling flat or cold." - Lori Paranjape

We are in the process of building a house. After many tweaks and reiterations of the plans, they are now final and the smallest bedroom came out to be 12x10 ft. This will be the youngest child's room - she's currently a baby but obviously won't stay a baby forever. All the other bedrooms are larger. There was a way to make that room larger by about 2 to 3 ft, but it would have entailed some rejigging of the layout that would have been too involved for the benefit. We agreed not to do it. Now I'm having a bit of a remorse about it, although probably without much merit. The builder says that it won't feel cramped with a 9 ft ceiling that is planned.

Can someone please reassure me that a bedroom that's 12x10 ft is perfectly normal and not too cramped? I know I'm being neurotic but please humor me.

Fine but very small. We have a tiny house with rooms that size. I would like them bigger. When kids are younger, its fine but hard to have a desk, bed (especially full sized), bookshelf and dresser in it.

I think it's fine for a kid bedroom. My son's room is 11x11 and totally fine. He has a twin trundle bed, nightstand, double dresser, bookcase, and room to play on the floor (which is where you'd pull out the trundle for a sleepover). Totally fine.

We have a small, older house and that's the size of DS room. It was fine with a toddler bed and a dresser and chair. It's a tight squeeze once we added another dresser and a bookcase. I'm anticipating a loft bed when he gets older so we can put a desk underneath.

It is fine for a smallest bedroom and as long as not all the secondary bedrooms are that size. Also depends on the closet/door/window layout so you have enough space to put furniture.

I think it is fine for a kid to have a twin bed as long as they live at home and that goes a long way in making the room usable.

My son (age 15) has an even smaller room-10x10.

He has a bed with drawers underneath so he doesn't need a dresser and a desk. It's a small room but most of the time he's so busy with school, sports, etc. he's not really in there that much anyway.

It's fine for kids with a single or twin bed. Anything larger takes up too much space. They are also fine for a home office. I had one house that had 10X11 spare bedrooms. They really were too small to use as proper guest rooms.

That is the size of the smallest bedroom in our three bedroom townhome. I do wish it were a bit bigger, especially since we don't have that many other areas for my kids to play in. If I were building a home with other dedicated family room/play space areas I don't think I'd find that bedroom size a problem.

PP you quoted. I'm not sure what you're taking issue with here. I used the word Fine, but feel free to sub in the word normal or whatever will make you feel better. We're on the same page here...

As far as height, obviously if you have a particularly tall child, then you need to look at either a bigger bed or a Twin XL.

It depends. My son is in that size room. It will be fine until HS. He is about 6 ft tall in 8th grade.

If he was going to be small, like under 6ft, it would be fine.

I think he will need a bigger bed soon. When his brother goes to college we will move him to the bigger room.

We fit 2 dressers but no room for a desk.

It's small but fine. But it's kind of unfair if your older kids have bigger rooms. Maybe they could share rooms and use the small one just for their beds and the larger one for their playroom and desks.
